The Reason
The dedication of children is a practice that has its beginning in the Bible. It is an expression of love for God and is a declaration on the part of the parent(s) to be a godly influence in the life of the child.
  • Genesis 22:12 – “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
  • 1 Samuel 1:27 – 28 – I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. (V.28) So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
  • Matthew 19:13 – 15 – Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuke those who brought them. (V.14) Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (V.15) When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
The Responsibility
First Responsibility – Parents: In expressing a clear desire to dedicate your child to the Lord, you are making a commitment to teach your child about the Christian faith with the hope that he/she will some day come to personally receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Second Responsibility – Church: It is our responsibility to provide you with support and guidance as you raise your child in the Christian faith. We pledge to stand beside you and be a resource of wisdom, strength and compassion to you and your child. We pledge to provide you with a family of believers, ready and willing to reinforce the Biblical truths that you share with your child in your home.

The Record
Therefore, it is important for us to know that you, as a parent(s), understand the vows you will be taking, that you are committed to this dedication and that your life shows evidence of their reality prior to taking them. Our duty before God is to allow you to take vows that you are sincerely prepared to keep, to the best of your ability and with God’s help, after the child dedication is passed; the Bible instructs us on how important it is to God to keep these vows.
  • Numbers 30:2 – When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.
  • Deuteronomy 23:21 – If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin.
  • Ecclesiastes 5:1 – 7 – (V.4) When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.
Vows that I could I ask
  • Will you set before this child the example of a godly life and instruct him/her in the elements of the Christian faith?
  • Will you seek to lead your child to acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, to nurture him/her in the Christian life an endeavor to bring him/her into membership and the fellowship of the church?
  • Will you do these things helping him/her to confirm by his/her own free will and actions the dedication we make today?

The Reward
What it is not: Dedication is not a way to bring about salvation of the child.
Salvation comes by faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior of our souls and not religion, traditions, or rituals. (John 1:12; 3:16)
What it is: Child dedication is an act of worship toward God by the parent(s)
  • Identification: That every child was created by God and is a gift to the parents and the church. Psalms 127:3 – Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him
  • Relationship: Creating a partnership with the parents and church to train and educate the child and to lead the child to his/her own relationship with Jesus. Deuteronomy 6: 5 – 7 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (V.6) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon hour hearts. (V.7) Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
